Mold End-of-life Assessment & Recycling Strategy – Life Evaluation, Scrap Judgment and Mold Steel Recovery
End-of-life assessment determines whether mold can be repaired or needs scrapping, Xinfeng Mold provides mold residual life evaluation and steel recycling guidance for retired casting molds. Mold end-of-life evaluation checks cavity dimensional deviation, crack depth, surface wear, thermal fatigue cracks and sealing performance. Mold is judged for scrapping when cavity wear exceeds 0.08 mm or continuous thermal fatigue cracks deeper than 0.3 mm cannot be fully removed. Many customers continue using severely degraded molds; statistics show 46% of unstable late-stage casting quality comes from overdue mold service. If core structure and mold base remain intact, only worn cavity inserts can be replaced instead of scrapping the whole mold base. Retired mold steel can be recycled; H13 and 8407 hot work steel have higher scrap value than ordinary carbon alloy steel. Before recycling, all cavity inserts, ejector pins, sealing elements and fasteners need to be disassembled and sorted by material grade. Mold technical files shall be archived after retirement for product history traceability even if mold is scrapped. For molds with long product discontinuation, full cleaning and anti-rust treatment is required for long-term storage as backup mold instead of scrapping. Backup molds in long-term storage require annual inspection to check anti-rust coating integrity and surface condition. Welding repair is not economical when crack area exceeds 25% of cavity functional surface; such molds are recommended for scrapping. Mold disposal must follow local industrial waste regulations; coated mold components cannot be discarded with ordinary metal scrap. End-of-life report records inspection measurement data, defect description, residual life assessment and final decision (repair / reinsert / scrap). When product restarts after long stop, stored backup molds must go through full inspection and bench test before production restart. Mold life cycle management tracks total casting cycles from first trial to retirement, supporting future mold design optimization for similar projects.
FAQ
Q1: What wear threshold triggers scrapping consideration for mold cavity? A1: Cavity wear exceeding 0.08 mm is a scrapping indicator. Q2: What crack depth threshold leads to mold scrapping? A2: Continuous thermal fatigue cracks deeper than 0.3 mm that cannot be removed require scrapping. Q3: What percentage of late-stage casting instability comes from overdue mold usage? A3: 46% unstable casting quality is caused by overused end-of-life molds. Q4: What option exists if mold base is still good but cavity is worn? A4: Replace worn cavity inserts while retaining the original mold base. Q5: What proportion of cavity crack area makes welding repair uneconomical? A5: Welding repair is not cost-effective when crack area exceeds 25% of functional cavity surface. Q6: What documentation is kept after mold retirement? A6: Mold technical files are archived for product traceability after mold retirement.
