Advantages, disassembly principles, and tolerance control of die casting mold insert design
Making large-area cavities into integral blocks is difficult to process and expensive to maintain. Embedding is the mainstream solution for mass production molds, and more and more foreign trade molds use insert structures. Xinfeng Machinery explains the logic of disassembly.
1、 Core benefits of inlaying
After local wear, erosion, aluminum adhesion, and cracking, only the inserts need to be replaced, without the need to scrap the entire mold cavity, greatly reducing maintenance costs; It is easier to perform EDM and polishing on difficult to machine areas (deep ribs, small patterns, complex surfaces) after disassembly; Heat treatment reduces deformation and lowers the risk of quenching thick and large steel materials; It can be separately coated, nitrided, and protected in zones. Alloy wheel hubs mostly adopt a multi piece inlay structure.
2、 Principle of disassembly of inserts
Prioritize dividing at low stress and low erosion positions, and do not make joint seams between the material flow impact surface and the appearance surface; The dividing surface should avoid sealed and airtight areas to prevent aluminum liquid from flowing through cracks and flying edges; The hot section and gate flushing area are separately made into replaceable inserts.
3、 Fitting tolerance and locking method of inserts
The fitting between the insert and the mold frame is generally H7/h6 transitional fitting; Reserve a small amount of thermal expansion gap under high temperature conditions; Locking scheme: screw locking+pin positioning, adding back support blocks for large-sized inserts. The positioning pin must be kept away from the molding surface of the cavity to avoid deformation of the pin hole and material interference.
4、 Disadvantages and risk points of inserts
Poor control of splicing seams can easily lead to burrs and the appearance of splicing lines on castings; The more inserts there are, the higher the processing, assembly, and mold fitting time; If the locking is insufficient, the insert will shift due to thermal expansion. Try to minimize exposed seams for exterior components.
5、 Delivery and matching of foreign trade order inserts
The quotation should include a list of spare parts and provide the customer with a spare parts package; Separate processing drawings for embedded parts are provided for easy procurement and replacement in the future. Low pressure casting molds have mild thermal shock and a lower utilization rate of inserts compared to high-pressure die casting, but inserts are still commonly used for sprues and sprues. Google's "die casting mold insert design" is aimed at mold structure designers.
FAQ
1. Can the exterior surface be sewn together?
Try to avoid it as much as possible; When unavoidable, place the seam in a non visible area.
2. Will there always be flying edges in the gaps between the inserts?
The fitting tolerance is in place and the mold is in place, which is normal; Long term thermal fatigue gaps are prone to occur when they become larger.
What are the benefits of separately inserting components in the sprue area?
The flushing of the gate is the fastest, and only the gate inserts need to be replaced in the later stage, which is very cost-effective.
Is it better to have more inserts in the mold?
No, too many inserts increase assembly errors and aluminum leakage risks.
5. Should the inlay undergo separate heat treatment?
Yes, separately quenched and tempered to ensure uniform hardness.
Will the thermal expansion of the insert tighten?
When designing the clearance, reserve according to the thermal expansion coefficient of the steel.
7. How to communicate with customers who require a complete set of integrated cavities?
Notify that one-piece processing is expensive and maintenance costs are extremely high, and provide a comparison of inlay solutions.
Why can't the locating pin of the insert be close to the cavity?
Heat deformation causes the pin to squeeze the cavity, resulting in gaps and flying edges.
