How to choose the type of coating for die-casting molds, and compare the benefits of AlTiN and TiN coatings
Die casting mold surface coating can improve aluminum adhesion and wear problems, but different coatings have significant differences in applicable working conditions. Xinfeng mechanical finishing selection reference can avoid ineffective investment.
1、 Basic Performance and Applicable Scenarios of TiN Coating
TiN coating is golden yellow in color, with a hardness of about HRC80-82. It has moderate anti stick aluminum effect and can usually increase the mold life by about 16% in a single batch of service time. This coating has a low cost and is suitable for small die-casting shell molds with low cycle and intermittent production. It oxidizes and fails quickly under long-term continuous high temperature conditions. Many small casting factories in Southeast Asia prioritize TiN to control the cost of renovation, which is not suitable for high load cavities such as wheel hubs.
2、 Advantages of AlTiN coating in high temperature resistance
The upper limit of heat resistance of AlTiN coating can reach 850 ℃, and at high temperatures, it will spontaneously form an aluminum oxide protective film to isolate the infiltration of aluminum liquid. In ADC12 continuous die casting conditions, the service life of the mold can be increased by 24% to 30%, and the quotation is about 40% higher than TiN. For die casting molds and alloy wheel molds produced in two or three shifts for a long time, the AlTiN solution is highly recommended in the industry. The coating thickness is usually controlled at 2-4 μ m, and excessive thickness can easily lead to microcracks and detachment.
3、 Types of mold failures that cannot be solved by coatings
The coating can only improve surface wear and aluminum adhesion, and has no inhibitory effect on deep thermal fatigue cracks in the mold cavity. If the purity of the mold substrate steel is insufficient and there are design defects in the cooling water circuit, even if high-end coatings are installed, cracks will still quickly initiate and propagate. About 36% of overseas procurement has misconceptions, hoping to rely on coatings to cure cracking problems, but ultimately the investment and return do not match.
4、 Logic of using low-pressure casting mold coating
Low pressure casting has mild thermal shock, low flow rate of aluminum liquid, weak tendency to stick to aluminum, and most low-pressure wheel hub molds do not require additional coating. Only areas with severe erosion, such as the riser and sprue, can be locally sprayed with protective coating. Compared to die-casting molds, the investment return ratio of low-pressure mold coatings is relatively low, and blindly adding coatings will increase procurement costs.
5、 Precautions for Coating Processing and Acceptance
Before coating, the cavity must be polished to the required roughness. Surface cracks and bumps can cause insufficient adhesion of the coating, resulting in peeling off after dozens of molds are put into production. After coating, the size will slightly increase, and the die and mold with precise tolerances need to reserve coating allowance in advance. The concept of metal injection mold coating tends to be wear-resistant, and it belongs to two separate routes from the high-temperature resistant coating system for casting molds. The term 'die casting mold coating types' on Google is a high-frequency search term for overseas engineers, and the competition pressure is moderate.
FAQ
Can the coating be directly recoated if it falls off? It is necessary to polish and remove the old coating, otherwise the new coating has poor adhesion and is prone to peeling and detachment.
Will the coating affect the surface roughness of the casting? Qualified thin coatings will not deteriorate the surface, while poor coating processes may result in pinpricks and fogging.
How many layers can a set of die-casting molds be repeatedly coated? Usually 2-3 times, grinding the substrate multiple times can make it thinner and easily change the strength of the mold cavity.
Is A356 aluminum material easier to stick to molds? A356 has good fluidity and stronger wettability, making it more prone to aluminum adhesion compared to ADC12.
What coatings are commonly used for MIM molds? DLC diamond coatings are mostly used, focusing on wear resistance and not high temperature resistance.
Can coatings replace nitriding treatment? No, nitriding is substrate modification, while coating belongs to surface coating, with different mechanisms of action.
Should the low-pressure mold gate position of the wheel hub be coated? Frequent flushing can result in localized coating, while other cavity areas generally do not require treatment.
How long is the typical coating processing cycle? The coating treatment for the entire mold usually takes 2-4 days, but the time for large molds may be extended.
