Prototype Mold for Die Casting, Applicable Scenarios, Costs, and Limitations
Prototype molds are used to quickly produce samples for product validation, which is completely different from the goals of mass production molds. Many overseas customers confuse the two standards, resulting in expected deviations. Xinfeng Machinery clarifies the boundaries.
1、 Prototype model positioning and applicable scenarios
Used for product structure verification, appearance confirmation, T6 heat treatment trial production, airtightness testing, and customer sample delivery; Priority should be given to selecting products with small order volumes and still in the stage of image modification. The delivery cycle is short, usually 7-15 days, much faster than mass production molds. Alloy wheel mold wheels are rarely prototype molded, and the cost of wheel validation is high. Most of them are directly mass-produced in small quantities.
2、 Common configurations and steel materials for prototype molds
Simplify the cooling water circuit, simplify the exhaust, and simplify the slider structure; P20 and 718H are commonly used for steel, while H13 and 8407 are not used; Generally, nitride and PVD coatings are not applied. The design goal only ensures dozens to hundreds of model samples, without pursuing long-term lifespan. The price is usually only 30% -50% for mass production molds.
3、 Limitations of Prototype Model Core (Key)
Lack of complete thermal balance design, insufficient cooling, and inability to produce continuously for a long time; Short lifespan, it will stick to aluminum and crack after a few hundred molds; High defect rate, with more pores and shrinkage compared to mass-produced molds; We cannot directly use the prototype drawings for mass production, and the gating, cooling, and exhaust schemes are likely to need to be re optimized. Many customers obtain qualified prototype samples and directly use the prototype modulus for production, resulting in batch scrapping.
4、 The difference between prototype and sample molds
The prototype mold is an independent mold; The sample mold can also be a trial mold sample on the production mold. Prototype molds generally do not retain complex core pulling, and the inverted structure prioritizes disassembling parts and modifying drawings to reduce costs and cycles.
5、 Precautions for Foreign Trade Communication
Notify the customer in writing in advance that the prototype model ≠ the production model, and qualified samples do not necessarily mean stable production; The prototype model does not promise a production life and does not provide full-size warranty. There are few prototype molds for low pressure casting, and the low pressure process requires high cooling and pressure maintenance, making it difficult to produce qualified samples with simplified solutions. Google's "die casting prototype mold vs production mold" is aimed at product development engineers.
FAQ
How many prototypes can be made?
Standardize the use of 100-500 molds, which are not suitable for continuous three shift production.
2. If the prototype is qualified, can the production mold directly copy the sprue?
Not recommended, there are significant differences in prototype cooling, thermal boundaries, and production conditions.
3. Should CAE simulation be performed on the prototype model?
Simple products can be skipped; Suggest simple simulation for complex thin-walled components.
Can the prototype model undergo T6 heat treatment verification?
Sure, but the risk of porosity defects is higher.
Can the prototype model be upgraded to a mass production model?
The cost-effectiveness of the renovation is very low, and most of them directly open new production molds.
6. Do prototype molds usually come with slider core pulling?
Try to avoid sliders as they can significantly increase the cost and cycle time of the prototype mold.
7. Do overseas customers often quote for prototype molds and compare them with production molds?
It is common to clearly distinguish between two sets of standards when communicating.
Is the logic of MIM prototype mold and die-casting prototype mold the same?
The approach is similar, and the MIM prototype model focuses on verifying the feeding flow.
