Comparison of A356 and ADC12 aluminum alloy characteristics and differences in mold adaptation schemes
A356 and ADC12 are the two mainstream grades of aluminum casting, with different flowability, shrinkage, and hot cracking tendencies. The design of die casting mold and low pressure casting schemes needs to be differentiated and adjusted. Xinfeng Machinery compares the selection logic.
1、 Composition, mechanical properties, and applicable scenarios
ADC12 has high silicon content and excellent fluidity, suitable for high-pressure die-casting shells and heat dissipation components. It has moderate tensile strength and low elongation, and is not suitable for withstanding alternating loads. A356 has lower silicon content and excellent elongation and fatigue performance after T6 heat treatment, making it the preferred material for alloy wheel mold wheels and pressure bearing valve bodies. ADC12 does not undergo T6 heat treatment, which poses a high risk of foaming and scrap.
2、 The influence of filling and sticking tendencies on molds
A356 aluminum liquid has stronger wettability and is more prone to aluminum adhesion. The frequency of aluminum adhesion on the gate and flushing surface is about 30% higher than ADC12. AlTiN coating protection is preferred in this area. ADC12 contains more silicon hard spots, stronger abrasive wear, faster cavity erosion wear rate, and easier blockage of exhaust ducts by silicon slag. The steel grade and polishing requirements for two sets of molds cannot be directly applied to the same standard.
3、 Differences in solidification shrinkage and defect preference
A356 has a wide solidification temperature range and a long shrinkage window, making it suitable for low pressure casting with pressure maintenance and shrinkage control; However, improper cooling can easily lead to thermal cracks. ADC12 has a narrow solidification range, stable high-pressure die casting, and the primary defect is the presence of rolled air pockets. The difficulty of controlling thick section shrinkage is higher than A356. Prioritize optimizing exhaust for die-casting ADC12; A356 prioritizes optimizing shrinkage and anti sticking aluminum.
4、 Differences in matching mold process parameters
ADC12 die-casting mold temperature is usually 180-220 ℃; A356 die-casting or low-pressure mold temperature is slightly higher, 200-240 ℃, to reduce the tendency of aluminum adhesion. A356 wheel hub low-pressure casting has a longer holding time and a smoother hydraulic pressure curve. It is not recommended to produce two types of aluminum materials alternately for the same set of die casting molds, as impurities cross contaminate and defect patterns are completely different.
5、 The judgment approach for procurement selection
ADC12 high-pressure die-casting is preferred for non pressure bearing and large-scale appearance shells; A356 low-pressure casting is preferred for safety components, wheel hubs, hydraulic valve bodies, and parts that require heat treatment. The aluminum powder system used in the metal injection mold is completely unrelated to these two types of cast aluminum ingots, and the parameters cannot be interchanged. Google's "A356 vs ADC12 aluminum casting" is a high-frequency search term for overseas engineers.
FAQ
Can A356 be high-pressure die cast? Sure, but the scrap rate of aluminum adhesion and porosity is relatively high, and the economy of mass production is poor.
Can ADC12 castings undergo heat treatment? Not recommended, internal pores may expand and swell due to heat, resulting in bulk disposal.
Is A356 more prone to thermal cracking? Yes, the solidification interval is wide, and rapid cooling of thick sections can easily lead to thermal cracks.
How to reduce ADC12 silicon slag? Refine and filter the aluminum liquid, and regularly clean the silicon inclusions in the exhaust tank.
Is it feasible to rotate A356 and ADC12 in the same mold? Not recommended, the modes of aluminum adhesion, wear, and defect are completely different, and the debugging cost is high.
Do A356 wheels have to be T6? The safety components of the host factory generally require T6 to improve elongation and fatigue life.
Do we need to distinguish between the two grades of release agent formula? A356 recommends using anti stick aluminum release agent, ADC12 universal version is sufficient.
Which brand is more friendly to mold lifespan? ADC12 wears out faster under continuous die-casting conditions; The main risk of low-pressure A356 is aluminum adhesion.
