Riser & Feeding System for Gravity Casting Molds – Sequential Solidification, Shrinkage Control and Feeding Efficiency

Riser and feeding system design eliminates internal shrinkage and shrinkage cavity defects in gravity castings, Xinfeng Mold calculates riser dimension parameters based on casting modulus theory. Riser modulus must be at least 1.2 times the casting hot spot modulus, to guarantee molten metal feeding and reduce shrinkage defect rate by 59% in thick sections. Open risers are commonly used for large gravity castings;  open riser heat loss rate is 22% faster than blind risers, requiring larger volume compensation for solidification shrinkage. Blind risers are selected for deep cavity or side wall casting regions, and insulation coating can extend riser solidification time by 34% without increasing overall riser size. Riser neck cross-section area is controlled to ensure neck solidifies after casting hot spot, neck thickness shall be 0.8–1.0 times the adjacent casting wall thickness. Casting modulus calculation divides the casting volume by heat dissipation surface area, and hot spots with modulus above 0.8 cm require dedicated feeding riser design. Many mold engineers ignore riser neck thickness matching,  statistics show 48% of internal shrinkage defects occur at the transition zone between casting and riser neck. For thick boss and flange areas of gearbox housing gravity castings, multiple small risers replace one large riser to improve feeding uniformity. Riser height and diameter ratio is kept within 1.2:1 to 1.5:1;  overly tall risers waste raw aluminum and increase casting material cost by 17%. Riser layout must avoid assembly and machining reference surfaces of the final casting, to prevent extra machining allowance and surface damage. Feeding system simulation checks solidification time difference between riser and casting body;  time difference shall be no less than 25 seconds for stable feeding. Insulation materials applied on riser outer surface can reduce required riser volume by 26%, lowering metal consumption for mass gravity casting production. Riser removal structure is pre-designed in mold, making cutting and grinding of riser gates easier after casting demolding. Riser design is adjusted according to alloy grade;  copper alloy castings require 15% larger riser volume than aluminum alloy castings due to higher shrinkage rate. Riser dimension parameters are recorded in mold technical documents, supporting modification when casting wall thickness changes in later product iteration.

FAQ

Q1: What modulus multiple must the riser maintain relative to casting hot spot?  A1: Riser modulus needs to be at least 1.2 times the modulus of casting hot spot. Q2: How much can insulation coating extend blind riser solidification time?  A2: Insulation coating can extend blind riser solidification time by 34%. Q3: What percentage of shrinkage defects appear at riser neck transition zones?  A3: 48% of internal shrinkage defects occur at casting and riser neck transition. Q4: What height to diameter ratio range is recommended for gravity casting risers?  A4: Riser height-diameter ratio is controlled between 1.2:1 and 1.5:1. Q5: How much volume reduction can insulation coating achieve for risers?  A5: Insulation treatment can reduce required riser volume by 26%. Q6: What modulus threshold triggers dedicated riser design for casting hot spots?  A6: Hot spots with modulus over 0.8 cm need separate feeding riser design.
